The MSI GT780DXR (let’s just call it the GT780) is a monster of a machine, loaded with nearly everything you’ll need to play games like a champion. This roomy laptop has a large amount of memory, plenty of hard drive space, and numerous extra features.

The GT780 doesn’t skimp on the fancy specs that gamers and multimedia fans love. The 17.3-inch screen supports full HD (at 1920 by 1080 resolution), and MSI includes a built-in 720p webcam, USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, and a pretty (though not especially useful) LED-backlit keyboard with full color-changing capability.

The GT780 performed well on our WorldBench 6 test suite, earning a mark of 146. Though this is a much higher score than most laptops achieve, it is only average for a system in the desktop replacement category. If you’re thinking of getting the GT780DXR instead of MSI’s lower-end GT683R, don’t expect to see a performance boost: The two laptops have virtually the same specs, and they collected the same benchmark score. What you pay extra for in the GT780 is the pretty, lit-up keyboard and the larger screen.

The GT780 also scored well in our games tests, thanks to its GTX 570M graphics card. On our Far Cry 2 benchmark, the GT780 managed a frame rate of 55 frames per second (at high quality settings and 1920 by 1080 resolution); the past few desktop replacements we’ve tested averaged about 42 fps on the same test. Still, the GT780 fell short of the less attractive, but more powerful Digital Storm x17, which delivered a frame rate of 78 fps on the same test, putting it in the vicinity of some lower-end performance desktop PCs we’ve recently tested.

The GT780′s design could use some work. Perhaps MSI didn’t think that users would plan on toting an 8.6-pound desktop replacement around for all to see. But that hasn’t stopped other other makers from stepping up the appearance of desktop replacements such as the HP Pavilion dv7 Quad Edition.

The GT780 is housed in a wedge-shaped black aluminum chassis that has some unusual angles. The cover has a brushed black aluminum panel emblazoned with the MSI logo and surrounded by smooth black aluminum borders and sawed-off corners.

The inside of the laptop presents you with more funky angles and contrasting textures. The keyboard deck is composed of brushed aluminum, while the touchpad is matte plastic; the keyboard is surrounded by a shiny plastic border, and the screen has a double border: an inner shiny plastic one and an outer matte aluminum one. Two silver speakers sit above the keyboard, and a plethora of touch-activated buttons surround the power button.

MSI’s GT780DXR isn’t the most powerful or the most attractive desktop replacement we’ve tested, but it’s an all-around solid machine. And the keyboard is so pretty.

“We have found a way to extend a new lithium-ion TOSHIBA Battery 484784-001 battery‘s charge life by 10 times,” said Harold H. Kung, lead author of the paper, in a statement released by the university. “Even after 150 charges, which would be one year or more of operation, the ACER Laptop probook 4510s Gateway Battery is still five times more effective than lithium-ion DELL Battery on the market today.” Normally, lithium-ion DELL Batteries are charged by electrons moving from the electrolyte into the anode. Current Laptop Batteries use anodes made of graphene, which allow one lithium atom per six carbon atoms. Silicon, which allows four lithium atoms per one silicon atom, has been been considered a superior medium for building batteries, but silicon tends to contract and expand significantly during charging, which can cause the lithium-ion hp  484784-001 Mitac Batteries to suffer fragmentation.

Kung’s team sandwiched clusters of silicon between the graphene sheets, which Kung’s team claimed would eliminate or marginalize the fragmentation. They also “drilled” 10- to 20-nm holes in the sheets to speed up the recharging process, by as much as ten times.

Written by Quality lithium battery Supplier: batteries-company.com on 17 November 2011   Researchers at Northwestern University have developed a lithium-ion electrode that they say will allow conventional Li-ion TOSHIBA Laptop to hold a charge 10 times greater than current SAMSUNG Laptop technology.

If true, that would theoretically allow electronic devices that use the technology about ten times the ACER Laptop Battery life that they use today, a key advantage for gadgets like power-hungry smartphones.

According to the university, the next step will be to look at improvements to the cathode and electrolyte. Kung’s team hopes to develop an electrolyte that can be shut off under high temperatures to prevent fires or explosion, then later reversed.

Barnes & Noble has released a $199 Nook Tablet with 8 GB of storage to better compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

The new model has the same dual-core, 1 GHz processor as the 16 GB Nook Tablet, which still sells for $249. However, the 8 GB model has half the RAM, at 512 MB. Both models have a microSD card slot for up to 32 GB in expanded storage.

The good news is that Barnes & Noble is allowing users to store more content from outside the Nook Store on the device’s internal storage. Out of 8 GB, only 1 GB is reserved for Nook Store content, and 4 GB is available for other content, such as movies and music. (The operating system gobbles up the rest.)

When the original 16 GB Nook Tablet launched in November, Barnes & Noble took flack for its fine print, which said that only 1 GB was allowed for outside content. That restriction still applies for the 16 GB model, but the fine print now says that users can visit a Barnes & Noble store on or after March 12 to reconfigure the internal memory. It’s not yet clear how much space users will be able to free up for outside content.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet and Amazon’s Kindle Fire launched around the same time last year. Although both devices are low-cost, 7-inch Android-based tablets with simplified software, the Kindle Fire seems to be winning the war. A recent report by iSuppli put Amazon in second place in the tablet market behind Apple, while Barnes & Noble placed fourth, trailing Samsung. Neither Amazon nor Barnes & Noble has released official sales figures.

A good 14-inch laptop with solid performance, design and features for a modest price.

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • Substantial port selection
  • Above average display with a mid-level contrast ratio
  • Surprisingly good audio
  • Good starting price ($599)

The Lenovo IdeaPad V470 is an ideal choice for users who want a budget-conscious notebook with both home and office features. It’s equipped with a second-generation Intel dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM, Intel HD graphics, and an HDMI port. Keep reading to find out more about this notebook, including full specifications, an overview of its build quality, and more.

BUILD AND DESIGN
The first thing you’ll probably notice about the V470 is that it’s an extremely

attractive-looking notebook. It has a clean, dual-color scheme of metallic gray and black, as well as a glossy screen bezel. The look appears business-casual and classy. And, at 4.8 pounds with a 14.0-inch screen and just over an inch thick, it’s portable, too.

The display cover and palm rest consist of brushed aluminum while the base is made of hardened plastic. Hardly any flex was seen when we pressed down on the palm rests with considerable pressure; it’s constructed very well. The display cover isn’t constructed as well, though — it’s just too thin to be considered sturdy. I could break it easily if I tried. Ripples appear on the screen when both top corners are bent inward. The chassis is much more durable; it doesn’t flex much at all. Overall, we would consider the V470 to have good build quality if the display cover was thicker and less worrisome

The hard drive and memory can be swapped out from the bottom panel. To replace the hard drive, simply remove a few screws as well as the drive compartment. The memory can also be increased up to 8GB (dual-channel) as there are two SO-DIMM sockets. If desired, the mini PCI Express card and optical drive can also be removed.

PORTS AND FEATURES
The V470 has a great port selection; above average for its price range. Even though it doesn’t have USB 3.0, it has a total of four USB 2.0 ports, along with a 6-in-1 memory card reader, VGA, HDMI, eSATA, separate headphone and mic jacks, and an optical drive with CD-RW/DVD-RW/DVD-Multi capabilities. The memory card reader is compatible with SD, SDHC, MMC, MS, MS Pro, and xD-Picture memory cards. The V470 also has a fingerprint reader to the right of the palm rest.

Overview

The Dell Latitude 13 is an ultra slim notebook with a 13.3″ screen and houses the GS45 chipset. Weighing in at little over 3.33 pounds, it leads the ultra slim class without breaking the bank. Pricing starts at 459 as of this post and there are a variety of options available through Dell.

Specifications

My Latitude 13 is configured as:

- Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 @ 1.3 GHz
- 13.3″ WLED backlit screen (1368×768)
- 2 GB DDR3 1333 RAM
- Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics
- 160 GB 5400 rpm HDD
- 65 W AC Adapter
- 8x Dell External Slim ODD
- Intel WiFi Link 5100
- 6 cell 30 WHr battery
- Windows 7 Professional 32 bit with media
- Dimensions .65″ x 13″ x 9″
- Weight is 3.36 pounds including 6 cell battery

Noise and Heat

The fan is inaudible almost 90% of the time. When browsing the web or writing emails, you won’t even notice it. Even under heavy load, like running Prime95 the fan is barely audible.

Under idle conditions, the palmrest is very cool to the touch. Under even heavy load with the HDD located right on the left bottom palm rest, you do not even feel the heat. The top of the keyboard starts to exhibit some heat, but again barely noticeable for me.

Battery life

Now upon ordering this notebook, I knew it only had a 6 cell 30 WHr battery. Leaving the WiFi on, and the screen 1/2 brightness and idle, I managed to squeeze 3 hours and 50 minutes before the battery got to 10% and the warning. Then charging it back and the next morning, I simulated 2/3 brightness and WiFi on and browsing forums and the web, and I got to 10% in about 3 hours 2 minutes. Again, I simulated heavy use by playing my Kenshin anime in VLC DVDrip with 2/3 brightness. After about 2 hours and 25 minutes, the battery 10% warning came out, kind of disappointing to me. The thin and lightness is sort of pointless if you have to find a wall outlet every 2-3 hours.

Conclusion

After I placed my order, I kept on checking on the arrival day. After about 1.5 days of testing, I still believe I made a good choice for a web browsing notebook. I went through work and multiple places today (McDonalds, Starbucks) and people were goggling their eyes at my thin Dell notebook. Many were more shocked when I told them I only spent 560 dollars on it. People who think Dell is a second rate electronics company, I urge them to buy their business line and think twice about their opinions. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.

Budget computer maker Gateway has updated the ID47H02u to the ID47H07u, (sometimes names are so much better!) which is a good move for an already successful machine, with improvements in battery life and audio output standing out, but this is a budget brand and for under $700 the consumer is getting a lot got their buck.

It is not an ultra book, it’s too heavy and has HDD, but it has the styling and looks of a more expensive computer with the aluminium alloy case and the ultra thin bezel that squeezes a fourteen inch display into a space normal used by a thirteen incher. The ID47H07u is currently available on the Gateway Amazon page at $649.99, so what do we get for that?

This updated Gateway notebook comes with a 14 inch HD 16:9 aspect ratio Ultra bright LED back lit Display with a 1366 x 768 of pixel resolution and it comes with a built in 1.3 Mega pixel HD Web camera. It will be powered by a 2nd Generation Intel Core i5-2430M Processor with 2.4 GHz and Turbo Boost Technology taking it up to 3.0 GHz. The graphics are coming from the Intel high definition Graphics card 3000, which may disappoint some buyers.

It comes with an average 500 GB Hard disk Drive (HDD) and a better 4 GB of DDR3 Memory. While networking has is covered by the 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi CERTIFIED and there is also Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) installed. The essential connectivity features two standard USB 2.0 Ports, one fast USB 3.0 Port and there is the HDMI Port for connecting to the TV monitor.

This notebook has a six cell Li-ion Battery (6000 mAh), which Gateway are claiming that it can offer up to eight hours of battery life. The Dimensions are 9 inches x 13 inches x 1.1 inches, it weighs in a hefty 4.6 lbs (2.1 kg) and will be running the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and has Microsoft Office Starter 2010 installed too!

Design
The plastic chassis is sturdy, but lightweight, making it easy to pick up and carry from class to class, or from room to room around the house. At 1.25 inches thick, It’s not the thinnest netbook we’ve seen, and Sony’s design emphasizes the prominent hinge with a power button on one end and a battery that elevates the rear of the chassis. Despite the chunky design, it still only weighs 3.05 pounds, which is lighter than the 3.5-pound HP Pavilion dm1z ($449 direct, 4.5 stars) and 3.1 pound Lenovo IdeaPad S205 ($579.99 direct, 3.5 stars).

The 11.3-inch widescreen is a bump up from the 10.1-inch screens normally found on netbooks, but the 1,366-by-768 resolution is fairly standard. It may not be enough space to work in side-by-side windows, but you’ll be able to surf the Web comfortably and enjoy 720p video through sites like Hulu and Netflix. You’ll also be able to use the VPC-YB35KX for Skype and similar video chat services thanks to an integrated camera and microphone found just above the screen.

The VPC-YB35KX’s full-sized keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience when compared to the 75- to 95-percent keyboards found on older netbooks. The chiclet keys are well spaced, but you will find that the keys themselves provide very shallow movement, and they feel like they rattle loosely a bit while typing, with the keys shifting beneath the fingertips as you type. The smooth surfaced trackpad is responsive, but small. Just above the keyboard, there’s also a button marked Assist, a dedicated button that calls up Sony’s VAIO Care support software.

Features
The VPC-YB35KX is equipped with a healthy selection of ports, with a few features not commonly found on a netbook, such as HDMI output, two card reader slots and Stereo Bluetooth support. That HDMI output adds a little something extra as well, putting out up to 1080p video to monitors and HDTVs. Also on the netbook are three USB 2.0 ports, jacks for a headphone and mic, a VGA video connection, and Gigabit Ethernet. Rounding out the selection is 802.11n Wi-Fi, which can be turned on and off with a physical switch on the device.

As is common in the netbook category, there’s no optical drive, but the VPC-YB35KX is equipped with a 500GB 5,400rpm spinning hard drive. That’s more storage space than you’ll find on either the Acer Aspire One 722-BZ480 ($329 list, 3.5 stars) or HP dm1z, which both offer only 320GB drives.

Preinstalled on the drive is a 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, along with Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security, and several VAIO-branded utilities, such as VAIO Care and Media Gallery. Sony also covers the VPC-YB35KX with a one-year warranty that includes parts and labor as well as one-year of toll-free tech support.

The VPC-YB35KX is equipped with AMD’s latest Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), a single chip die shared by both a 1.65GHz dual-core E-450 processor and AMD Radeon HD 6320 graphics processor. This approach allows for better graphics support than might be offered with traditional integrated graphics, while conserving space and energy. The APU is complemented with 4GB of RAM. In Cinebench R11.5 the Sony scored 0.65 points, outpacing the Lenovo S205 (0.63) and HP dm1z (0.61).

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love Apple. I’ve got an iMac, a MacBook Pro, an iPhone, and an iPod Touch, and I love all of them. And while my Apple arsenal might pale when compared to that of the most ardent Apple fanatic, there’s no doubt about my faith in the product that the company produces. Thanks to the advice of my wife—who, in the interest of full disclosure, worked for Apple while she was in college—the first PC I ever bought was also my last, and I’ve never looked back.

But, not unlike the seemingly conflicted rationale that most of our parents gave right before our worst punishments as kids, it’s the ones we love the most that often need the most consistent chastening and redirection.

Until now, I’ve been one of Tim Cook’s biggest fans. Not long after Apple came under considerable criticism for the work conditions to which overseas suppliers and manufacturers subjected their workers, I hailed the seemingly genuine concern Cook had for the people who work 10-plus hours a day, often seven days a week to make sure that our comparatively care-free lives can be that much more convenient for the cheapest possible price. Lauding Cook’s desire to show the world that Apple cares about all workers in its supply line as a turning point in the company’s oft-clandestine history, I initially concluded that a “New Era of Transparency” was sweeping through Apple.

“Tim Cook is no Steve Jobs,” I wrote. “But in an age where consumers continue to demand increased transparency from the companies they patronize, that’s probably a good thing.”

But one month later, the hope that once unmistakably shone through Apple’s historically enigmatic organizational structure seems to be getting swallowed up as quickly as it appeared.
