New Battery for my MacBook Pro
Today I’ve replaced the Apple laptop battery of my MacBook Pro 15”. This is the second time, so this is the third battery, that I need to buy for this laptop. I had to do it (sorry Florence) because my laptop had become simply unusable with the old battery. Either I had to keep it plugged in all the time or I risked seeing my Mac turn off unexpectedly and without any low battery alert.
I made both batteries last for about 400 cycles, which is about 25% more than the expected lifetime of this type of elements. Still, three batteries in four years is quite a high number in my opinion.
Reading the comments on the Apple Store website I am not the only one complaining about this specific battery model. Although it seems to me that only the MacBook Pro 15” is affected by an unusual short battery lifetime.
This year I’ll most likely buy a new Mac. All new Mac laptops have a non user-replaceable battery and you have to send the laptop to Apple to get it replaced. My only concern is how long it is going to take before I’ll have to send my Mac to the repair centre. One thing is ordering a battery on the Apple Store, another is to have to mail your computer in. The turnaround time is likely a week or more which means one week or more of lost productivity.
My hope is that the new laptop batteries are technologically superior than the one on my old Mac and with a higher number of cycles and that this is also reflected in a real usage scenario.
Have you had to replace the battery on any of your unibody Mac? What is your experience with the Apple repair centre?
