There’s very little to dislike about the Asus X53E-SX1330V . The glossy red chassis looks great, the Intel Core i7-2670QM processor is extremely capable and it’s well-priced, at £750 (around $1,210) full price and as low as £540 (around $870) from some retailers.

We can get tired of black and silver chassis designs, so a splash of colour is no bad thing. The Asus X53E is a deep shade of scarlet with a wave pattern on the lid made up of minute dots.

Inside the laptop, the blank red is offset with the black isolation-style keyboard, and the result is a real head-turning design. There’s also hardly any evidence of flex around the body of the laptop – even in the centre of the Asus Laptop Keyboard and around the DVD drive.

The keyboard itself doesn’t just look attractive, it’s also functional and comfortable to type on. There’s enough space between the keys, so it’s unlikely you’ll hit the wrong key by mistake.

You’re also given a dedicated numeric keypad for data entry and number crunching. There aren’t any dedicated hotkeys, but the dual-function keys are clearly marked and easy to use.

Above the keyboard is the Altec Lansing speaker grid. It’s perfectly serviceable for the solo user watching a film or listening to music while working.

If you want to use the Asus X53E-SX1330V as a media machine, there’s 500GB of storage space to fill with music and movies and a screen capable of 720p high-definition footage.

The screen, while not as bright as other machines, boasts a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution and excellent viewing angles. Also, because the bezel surrounding the screen is particularly thin, it gives the impression you’re looking at a screen larger than 15.6 inches in size and Asus Laptop Keyboard .

Interior power comes courtesy of a top-spec Intel Core i7-2670QM processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU. You won’t find enough graphical muscle here to play the latest games, but for other resource-hungry uses – such as editing high-definition home movies or programming your own website – these specifications are up to the task.

The powerful processor and 4GB of RAM also mean that general day-to-day usage is a fast, smooth experience. You can multitask with several web pages open, while simultaneously playing music from iTunes and checking email with Microsoft Outlook, without the computer grinding to a halt.

If you want to plug in a few accessories, there are a few ports to take advantage of. The Asus X53E-SX1330V is furnished with three USB ports, an HDMI and VGA port, as well as an Ethernet connection and the DVD RW optical drive. We would have liked to have seen a USB 3.0 port, Asus Laptop Keyboard  but this configuration is standard for a laptop at this price.

This laptop doesn’t excel at battery life, though, posting only 197 minutes in our benchmarking tests, but, that’s really one of the few drawbacks in evidence here.

Verdict

Overall, we can’t help but recommend the Asus X53E as an excellent purchase. Its extra-powerful processor and impressive usability mean you can expect it to last at least for the next three years.

 Given that these machines were created to be as beautiful as they are practical, you won’t be embarrassed pulling any of them out of your bag. Having said that, there are some design issues dating back to classic PCs still embedded within a couple of these Ultrabooks.

The HP Folio 13, for one, stands out from the chunky bag-filling laptops with laptop keyboard  of yesteryear but fails to make an impression here. Yes, it is thin and yes it looks smart enough to be carried by CEO or hipster student, it just lacks the style that the term Ultrabook conjures up.

Similarly, the Toshiba Satellite Z830 may be a step up from the HP model in terms of its sleek design but it still feels a little too square, in both senses of the word. Even a machine this deliciously thin requires extra styling to stand out.

Things fair better with the Acer Aspire S3 and the Asus Zenbook UX31. The Asus design team has made their product a touch more rounded and pretty than the square Toshiba Ultrabook. Meanwhile, Acer has created a machine so thin it looks like you could place it on the hob and fry an egg on it. It’s a compliment to suggest that the Aspire S3 wouldn’t look out of place in an Apple store.

Build quality was generally good and the machines’ ultra-thin form factors did not cause any actual problems, even if they did feel a little flimsy sometimes while we were handling them. This was particularly true of the Toshiba. The Asus, meanwhile, manages to feel heavy when compared to the other models, yet comes across as extremely well put together.

Ultrabook Group Test: Keyboard and touchpad

 Our favourite laptop keyboard   belonged to the HP Folio 13, which was springy enough to get us typing at top speed. Toshiba’s Satellite Z830 also has a usable keyboard even when you happened to have the ultrabook propped up on your lap in bed. The Satellite’s touchpad is also very responsive and we prefer the inclusion of dedicated right and left mouse buttons as they make it easier than hitting the touchpad and hoping you get the right spot, as is the case with the Acer Aspire.

Unfortunately, we’re not a fan of the keyboard on the Zenbook UX31, even down to the italicised font Asus has chosen for the keys. One problem with making thin computers is that the keys generally sit low and users are more likely to stumble and make mistakes as they type. We found the Zenbook most difficult to deal with in this way.

At least the separated areas of the touchpad work very well for right and left clicking – no dedicated buttons here. Pushing three fingers up the Zenbook’s touchpad also swings all your open windows into a carousel for easy browsing. However, it is a shame the Delete button is so dangerously close to the power switch.

While there were a number of smaller little custom PC manufacturers that rose up in those ten years, Alienware still held a huge market share – so much that Dell decided to buy them – this in and of it self was big news, but more important to this review was that Asus saw the market in high end gaming rigs, and decided to jump in with the Republic of Gamers line. Six years later, the quality of Alienware rigs has noticeably declined under Dell, but the Republic of Gamers branding is stronger than ever.

The G75 is the new flagship model for the Republic of Gamers brand – maybe flagship isn’t the right word, no, I think due to the immenseness of the G75 that mothership would be a much better term. The G75 is the big bully on the school yard, and the games you play are its targets. It comes with a 17.3″ display, Asus Laptop Keyboard  is about 52 mm thick, and weighs a hefty 8.7 lbs with its 8 cel l laptop battery attached – robust indeed. I have a number of other laptops in the house, including an older Toshiba Satellite that I thought was the biggest laptop I would ever own, and it cowers in fear next to the size of the G75.

Looking at the G75, you are instantly drawn to its sleek design. All of the dark grey / almost black surfaces are coated in a rubber material, which makes the whole system look and feel unique. The only downside to this coating is that it shows up fingerprints like nothing else, but some electronic wipes will fix that with no problem. The rubber coating on the outside might be for a purely design aspect, but on the inside under the keyboard it does far more. I’ve used laptops for years to do work on, and there is always a measure of discomfort after long typing sessions because your wrists are resting on the metal or plastic of the laptop case – while we have the nice “gel bars” for desktops, I haven’t seen something like that for a laptop. Asus though does what they can here, and the rubber surface below the Asus Laptop Keyboard  which like the Acer Laptop Keyboard does tons to alleviate wrist stress.

Finally I have to talk about the last major part of any good laptop – the laptop battery . Unfortunately the battery life of the G75 is not the greatest. Just surfing the internet caused the laptop battery to drain in just over two hours, and playing Skyrim for an hour and thirteen minutes caused the system to shut off. After taking apart the back though, I see how much they squeezed in and know that they might not have had much room for a bigger batter – still though, with life that short gaming on the go is not really an option, and you’ll always want to ensure there is a plug handy. The only way I was able to even play games while on battery was to keep the power settings at Maximum Performance as well, since leaving it on anything else causes insane frame rate drops.

After uncovering a YouTube video on ASUS’s channel claiming that the soon-to-be-released ASUS Padfone’s battery was capable of up to 102 hours of use when in laptop mode which also has a comapct  Asus Laptop Keyboard  , the folks at Engadget decided the numbers were a bit too good to take at face value. For 3G ASUS measured 2.1 hours in phone mode, 8.9 hours in tablet mode, and the aforementioned 14.1 hours in laptop mode.

Still, these numbers represent an ideal lab situation. Will actual real world use amount to less (or more) longevity? We’re itching to find out.

The Contenders
