Battery life is arguably becoming a laptop’s most important metric. Processor speed is confusing — different architectures have different performance at different clock speeds. Discrete graphics is even worse. But the battery? More is better! Everyone knows that. And manufacturers have latched on to it as an important marketing tool.

We’re going to take manufacturer claims to task by examining 10 recently released laptops and comparing their claimed battery like the   Dell Laptop Battery   endurance with the results we received during our reviews. Let’s see if these laptops can back up their boasts.

The Contenders

We wanted to have a well-rounded list of laptops for this comparison, so we’ve picked ten recently reviewed models. Some are Ultrabooks, some are desktop replacements, and some are luxury portables. Here’s the list of competitors and the battery life like the    Dell Laptop Battery   listed by the manufacturer on its website. Not every laptop we’ve reviewed is marketed alongside a battery life number, so we’ve picked laptops that claim a definite number. The text below is quoted from manufacturer marketing or spec sheets.

ASUS UX31: 7 hours or more
ASUS U36JC: Up to 10 hours
HP Folio 13: Up to 9.5 hours
HP dm1z: Up to 10 hours
Lenovo IdeaPad U400: Up to 4 hours
Lenovo ThinkPad T420: Up to 5.5 hours
Sony Vaio SE 15.5″: Up to 6 hours
Sony Vaio Z: Up to 7 hours and 15 minutes
Toshiba Satellite P755: Up to 5.7 Hours
Toshiba Portege Z835: Up to 8 hours of “non-stop browsing, emailing, doing and enjoying”

If we average all of these numbers we come to a total average    Dell Laptop Battery   life of 7.3 hours (rounding up slightly). That’s quite robust. Many of these laptops are portable because manufacturers usually send us high-end models for review rather than stripped-down desktop replacements, but even so, seven hours is excellent.

Now let’s see if these claims are met.

Real battery life

For the purposes of this comparison we are going to be using the numbers generated by our Battery Eater Reader’s Test benchmark. This is not a strenuous workload. It opens a document and scrolls through it endlessly. We leave Wi-Fi on and display brightness at 70 percent. We also engage the most aggressive power-saving mode available. These conditions should result in solid  laptop battery   life results.

In the table at the top of the story we’ve compiled our results and the difference, both for each laptop and for all laptops as a whole. Let’s take a look.

What we find most interesting about these results is how well they break down by manufacturer. The Asus laptops are off by exactly 10%. The HP laptops are off by 16 percent and 15 percent. The Sony laptops are off by exactly 15 percent. Only Toshiba and Lenovo show significant variance, but both are consistent in the direction of their results — the Toshiba laptops underperformed and the Lenovo laptops beat their estimates.

The R835-P88 weighs 3.2 pounds on PC Labs’ scale—more than the 2.9 pounds of the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299 direct, 4 stars) and numerous ultrabooks, though actually an ounce less than our Editors’ Choice ultrabook HP Folio 13 ($1,048.99 direct, 4 stars). Its magnesium alloy chassis is a handsome dark blue, accented by chrome (plastic) screen hinges.

The screen feels solid, less flexible or flimsy than that of Toshiba’s 2.5-pound ultrabook models such as the Portege Z830-S8302. It’s a glossy 13.3-inch panel with the usual 1,366 by 768 resolution; high capacity laptop battery like the Lenovo Laptop Battery vertical viewing angles are narrow enough that you’ll find yourself adjusting its tilt, but horizontal angles are sufficiently broad and brightness and color are fine.

The keyboard like the Acer Laptop Keyboard , as mentioned, isn’t backlit but offers a first-class layout, with dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys plus Ctrl and Delete in their proper lower left and top right corners, respectively. Its typing feel is snappy and sure, if a little shallow. The touchpad works smoothly, its twin buttons giving just the right amount of tactile feedback.

Features
On the right side of the R835-P88′s chassis, next to the DVD±RW drive, are headphone and microphone jacks, a USB 3.0 port, and an Ethernet port. On the left are VGA and HDMI ports and two USB 2.0 ports, one an eSATA combo port with Toshiba’s “sleep and charge” functionality for recharging handheld devices without turning the laptop on.

Bluetooth and WiMax are absent, but the R835-P88′s 802.11n Wi-Fi worked fine in our tests and Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) is on hand for users who want to zap audio and video to an HDTV set equipped with a Belkin (Best Deal: $59.99 at Amazon Marketplace)or Netgear (Best Deal: $92.36 at ANTOnline)adapter. Toshiba preloads the system’s spacious 640GB (550GB free out of the box), 5,400-rpm hard drive with a slew of house-brand utilities and a scanty 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security.

The diminutive speakers above the keyboard like the  Compaq Laptop Keyboard pump out pleasant enough audio, but were occasionally drowned out during our tests by the Toshiba’s cooling fan—inaudible during routine productivity work, the latter grew noticeably loud during strenuous exercises such as our graphics benchmarks.

We all know that Intel wants Ultrabooks to be more affordable–the company claimed that there will be US$699 models by this summer.

This may be a reason that Intel is pushing laptop manufacturers to adopt a standard battery cell (a typical notebook battery like the Dell Laptop Battery  is made up of multiple cells) design for their Ultrabooks. The company has proposed a 60 x 80mm cell design that is 16mm thin, which is slightly slimmer than the 18mm versions used on standard laptops. While even thinner designs are possible, Intel says that they are more expensive and provide less power.

Sony has unveiled its latest VAIO E Series 14 laptop  range and has added a bit of colour to mark the occasion.

Available in white, black and even pink, Sony’s style team has introduced a new “wrap-around” design that sees the borders of the lid, base, touchpad and keyboard like the SONY VGN-CR Series Keyboard all decorated with a colourful trim.

Sony is key to champion the VAIO E Series 14’s looks, and while we found them fetching enough, it was a new piece of tech that really caught our eye.

This latest VAIO range will, for the first time, feature Gesture Control enabling the user to navigate and instruct their laptop by performing certain hand movements in front of the built-in HD web cam.

For example, a flick to the left or right will turn the webpage or photo you’re looking at, while pulling your hand down will pause your music or a slideshow.

Our personal favourite is the ability to turn your music volume up or down with a rotating movement. As though you were turning an imaginary dial.

Of course VAIO’s Gesture Control is limited to those programs that are able to support it, which currently include Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer 9, PowerPoint and PowerDVD.

Though the VAIO E Series 14’s laptop battery  life is billed at seven hours, Sony has included a light sensor that dims the keyboard’s backlight depending on how light your current environment is, which should help increase battery life.

The Rapid Wake + Eco function will also save your work for up to 10 days by putting the laptop into a deep sleep when you close its lid.

Once opened, the notebook will fire up immediately and you’ll be able to carry on where you left off.

The Sony VAIO E Series 14 features a 14-inch display (hence its name) and weighs in at around 2.3kg.

Available from the end of June, a Sony VAIO E Series 14 laptop will set you back around £649 depending on which retailer you frequent.
